my favorite quick run customer:

is a tan man estimated to be in his late thirties or early forties. He is fit, probably from some outdoor physical work such as construction. Usually when he comes into the store he is shirtless. His shoulder length dirty blonde hair, thinning on top, always appears to be wet, so it’s composed of several spiral curl strands. Today he wore my favorite outfit.

From the feet to the top:

Brown dirty lace up work boots, ankle high. White socks bunched up stick out the top. Cut off jeans, rolled up to hide the fringes–so short that the front pockets stick out at the bottom. In his left back pocket is a red bandana. Shirt is a faded orange Harley Davidson brand thing, with the sleeves cut off–and better yet–the middle is cut so that it’s a half shirt. Hair’s the usual, and red sunglasses rest at the top of his forehead.

Secretly, I am in love with him.

in other news: at the last minute I got tomorrow off work, both places. I have no idea what to do with myself!!!

an interesting two days because:

-Yesterday I saw an old woman with the exact same purse as me (a white leather one with different colored patches aka “the purse every mom had in the 80s”)

-A 5 or 6 year old threw a fit in the gas station this morning because her father would not buy her beef jerky. She stomped, and screamed, and crossed her arms and pouted her bottom lip. Finally, she threw her plastic bottle of chocolate milk on the cement floor and it burst into a chocolate milk puddle. She ran away yelling at her father, “This is all YOUR fault!”. He chased her and asked me, “Is there a restroom in here?” so I pointed, and seconds later could hear him spanking the girl and her saying, “I don’t like you!”

-I sold a $12.99 fanny pack to a biker woman wearing chaps

-A man came in this morning and asked, “Can we bring pets in here?” I told him I didn’t think so, so he continued, “Well, if it can’t be seen then would it be okay?” and I was a little creeped out so I just agreed that I guessed it would be alright. Then I didn’t say anything because I had no interest. He continued, “Well don’t you want to know what kind of pet I have?” I didn’t, but said sure anyway. He had a baby skunk in the front pocket of his t-shirt.

-I hit a skunk with my car last night at 9:57pm

so yesterday at work these guys hung out in the lobby for about two hours and one of them had sumo wrestler hair and was about sumo wrestler size. as he was leaving, he asked one of the other girls working (who he is friends with) who, “the girl with the glasses is” and “is she single?” because “man, she is so hot”

how cute. at least he didn’t try to hit on me. that’s always creepy.

I CAN’T WAIT TO GET OUT OF THIS TOWN AND ONWARD WITH LIFE AND ADVENTURE AND ROMANCE AND FULL-TIME FUN aka college trimester stress and weekend partying when i should be studying and working and hardly making enough to pay rent and living off free-food opportunities.

went to maryville to visit the boyfriend yesterday after work, and came back today before work. he cooked me spaghetti for dinner and pancakes for breakfast. we rented mystic river–which was decent but felt like it was becoming entirely too long towards the end.

stuffing a visit between work shifts wears me out, but the three hour drive is worth it. he bought me an old man jacket and also got himself a matching one, so we are well on our way to becoming the cheesiest couple ever. sometimes we match without trying and really, it’s just pathetic. all we have to do now is actually get around to making shirts with each other’s picture on them (we’ve had this idea since the first week of dating).

speaking of cheesy: at kfc the other day i saw an old man at the buffet wearing a blue trucker hat and on the front of it was a family portrait! i was incredibly jealous. also: the regular customers of the gas station are now talking to me outside work. it drives me crazy because i have absolutely nothing to say to the old farmers in my town, but “yeah” and “haha!”

a woman came into kfc yesterday and ordered a meal, and i tried with all my might to keep my eyes away from her withered cleavage. when i handed her her meal, i was anxious for her to turn around and leave, but apparently i was being too nice to her so she had to tell me some important news:

she lifted her hand out towards me and said, “see my new ring from ireland?”

“cooool” i said, automatically, with no interest. something you’d say to a child who won’t shut up.

“i got a package from europe today! full of all sorts of stuff! emeralds and keltic music! it made my day!”

“i bet!”

it’s just weird when people just share that stuff with you out of no where. maybe i should be nicer. it makes me wonder if they have anyone else to tell.

since it’s now officially june 16, that means it’s my parent’s 31st wedding anniversary. it is great, but i hope that when/if i am older and married that i don’t turn into them. my dad is just a work maniac who comes home and drinks 16 beers and plays pinochle on the internet for 2 hours, while my mom watches animal planet and asks, “when are you coming to bed?” i wonder if there is anything there anymore or just a comfort dependency. i never used to wonder things like that

it’s a good thing i hear jessica simpson’s cover of “take my breath away” about six times a shift at kfc since it’s so goddamned horrible. it’s exactly what i want to have in my head ALL THE TIME.

questions:

1). why is jessica simpson famous, besides for being notoriously stupid–and is her singing career just more of a chance to make fun of her or is it supposed to be real?

2). why would anyone cover that song anyway, or allow jessica simpson to do so?

middle aged+ men like to come into the gas station and stick around for about five minutes making small talk with me and i hate it. and what is it with everyone asking me if i am married? and since i’m not, if i ever want to become married?

last week this hispanic guy with semi-broken english came into the store and bought a 22oz budweiser. he asked me my name, so i told him. then he went into, “are you married?”

“no,” i replied.

“got boyfriend?” he asked.

“yes,” i said, with no interest.

“can you give me your phone number?”

“no.”

“why not?”

“because i don’t want to.”

i love working with the public.

i am afraid that i have helped a recovering alcoholic fall back into the arms of the devil!

this man came into the gas station and went straight to the bathroom, but instead of going in like most people he just stood there and asked me if i had two half pints of congress vodka. i said yes. he asked me to go ahead and ring them in, and told me to get his money from him standing in the bathroom doorway. i gave him a confused look and he was like, “my wife’s in the car and i don’t want her to see me.” so i rang in the vodka and gave it to him as he handed me a $5 bill, and also said, “i want a pack of gum too, big red if you have it.”

“a small pack?” i asked?

he said yes, so i went to go get it because he was not moving from the bathroom doorway. i took it to the register and started ringing it in when he said, “you can bring that over here too.” i thought he was going to go to the bathroom and just pick it up on his way out, but apparently not. i got to keep his change, while he chugged vodka in the bathroom and covered up the smell with big red gum.

he put the bottles in his pants and then went back out to his car.
