I already wrote about this on Twitter and Facebook, but I’ve got to get all the outlets covered on this one:
Yesterday when I was riding the bus, I saw a lady playing her flute in her car while waiting at a red light.
Let the image soak in for a moment. Here it is again: There’s a lady driving to work in the morning. She’s stuck at a red light so she’s decided to whip out her flute and play a little tune.
I’ve spent a lot of time replaying this moment in my head–for a couple reasons. The most obvious reason is that I take a ton of pleasure in moments like these that just seem so bizarre and ridiculous. The other reason is that I really want to understand why she was doing that. Maybe she takes lessons and really has no other time to practice. Maybe she was on her way to a morning recital. I don’t know.
All I know is that this may have been the highlight of my week, and I’m unsure what to make of that.
Rad. I’m a flute player – I may have to try this. But I don’t have a car so I’d have to whip it out on the bus…

I think flute playing on the bus would go over well.

I am trying to decide if this is more or less dangerous than applying mascara
in the car. Also, what is she playing? Is she playing scales or a full on melody?
Maybe she was on her way to some sort of audition and wouldn’t have time to warm
up once she got there? Or maybe she gets really self concious warming up in
front of other flautists?
Like you, I am filled with questions about this.
People are awesome.

This is so weird! Or was she playing WHILE driving? So many questions.
People are really so funny.

I love these moments, too. Also, people walking cats on a leash. Ain’t gonna happen, but love their optimism.

The cats on leashes reminds me: I’ve seen a lot of people walking around with the dogs in strollers. At first I thought there was just one lady that I saw all the time doing it, but now I’ve seen several people.

I’ve seen a lot of dogs in strollers of late, too. At first I thought it was really old infirm dogs, but I saw a pair of perfectly healthy looking dachshunds in a stroller a few days ago. It used to be that our dogs pulled us around…

You always see the coolest people in your city. I’m moving where you are! I want to see weirdos too!

It is a good place for people watching! I think it helps that my weekly schedule leads me to various places in the city and allows me to mingle with a lot of different people–professionals, the homeless, students, kids, retired people, etc. If I were working in my own neighborhood and driving instead of taking the bus, I’d never see anything fantastic!

I love this.
